Hearts of Oak hand over crown to Norton

APPROACHING the final few games of the season, and a number of issues have already been resolved.

Norton Athletic were crowned division one champions last Thursday - without even kicking a ball - as fifth placed Hearts of Oak lost to Ole Frank, meaning the village side couldn't be caught at the top of the table.

And sealing the championship in style, Norton followed this up with a 4-1 away win at seventh-placed Pot Black (Danny Hoadley 2, Steven Hak 2).

Spexhall moved up from fourth to second after a 4-2 away win at tenth placed Kirkley & Pakefield A, while Oxford Arms are now joint third - but three goals behind Waveney Reserves - after a 0-0 home draw with Hearts of Oak on Saturday and a 3-1 away win at Pot Black on Tuesday.

Barsham are now sixth after a 3-0 home win over bottom of the table Beccles Caxton Reserves. Corton White Horse Seltic remain in 11th place after consecutive defeats - 4-2 at home to 11th placed Mutford & Wrentham last Saturday and 6-2 away at Hearts of Oak on Tuesday.

In division two, AFC Star now can't be caught at the top after the week's results. They have one game left and even if they fail to beat third placed Great Yarmouth Town Hall they will still finish six points ahead of their rivals.

Second placed Pakefield Re-United (Harlow, Coote) lost 2-4 to Gt Yarmouth Town Hall last Saturday, and the Yarmouth side - with games in hand - can overtake Pakefield in their remaining matches.

Town Hall beat already relegated Harleston Town Reserves 3-0 in midweek, with the bottom of the table side having picked up a point from a 3-3 home draw with sixth placed Hopton last Saturday.

Suffolk Punch remain in fourth after a 2-1 away win at tenth placed Crusaders, while Norton Athletic Reserves moved up to seventh with two wins this week - 4-2 over 11th placed Tudor on Saturday and 2-1 away at eighth placed Lowestoft International on Wednesday.

The International side has previously beaten ninth placed Ellingham 5-1 last Saturday, while 12th placed Bungay Town A were gifted the points as first from bottom Sole Bay United Reserves failed to raise a side.

It's all still to play for in the third division, but it has been a good week for leaders Waveney Gunners. Two victories - 1-0 over tenth placed Oxford Arms Reserves and 4-0 over fourth placed Earsham - in the past week now mean they head the table by three points from second placed Waveney A and they still have two games in hand.

Waveney A lost 4-2 at home to seventh placed Corton White Horse Seltic Reserves last Saturday. Spexhall Reserves, now in third, fine run continued as they beat eighth placed Blundeston Magpies Reserves 3-1.

Earsham drew 0-0 with sixth placed Norman Warrior last Saturday as they dropped points this week, but fifth placed Kirkley & Pakefield B were held to a 1-1 away draw at first from bottom Factory Arms.

Ninth placed Mutford & Wrentham Reserves beat 12th placed Westhall 1-0, while 11th placed Marquis of Lorne had a good week with successive home wins - 3-0 over bottom of the table Carlton Rangers on Saturday and 2-0 over Corton White Horse Seltic Reserves on Wednesday.

Norton on brink of winning title

THE week's results have proved to be crucial in the battle at the top of the first division - with Norton Athletic now just one point away from winning the title.

In fact, the village side - at the time of going to press - could already be champions. That is provided sixth placed Hearts of Oak - who are the only side that can prevent Norton from winning the league - failed to win against Ole Frank last night (Thursday).

Norton, with three games still to play, beat bottom of the table Beccles Caxton Reserves 5-0 on Saturday with goals from Kevin Briers (two), Nick Persich, Dan Hoadley and an own goal.

With second placed Waveney Reserves suffering their third consecutive defeat, this time 2-1 at home to seventh placed Pot Black - who scored through Gav Hunt and a Darren Boyd penalty, with Ian Hunter scoring the Waveney goal, Norton needed only four points to secure the title.

But with Hearts of Oak losing 1-0 to Pot Black on Tuesday evening, Norton are now only a point away from the title.

Micki Williams' sixth placed Hearts of Oak side - who still have five games left - had previously beaten eighth placed Blundeston Magpies 5-1 on Saturday.

Fourth placed Spexhall were gifted the points after Ole Frank were unable to raise a side, while late goals from tenth placed Kirkley & Pakefield A's Chris Mayhew, Kez Wardrope and Rob Bunning sealed the points with a 3-1 away win at first from bottom Mutford & Wrentham.

In division two, it has been another bad week for second-placed Pakefield Re-United, beset by injury problems. They lost 6-3 to bottom of the table Harleston Town Reserves on Saturday, and then drew 4-4 with eighth placed Lowestoft International on Tuesday night.

AFC Star are now nine points clear at the top of the table as they beat seventh placed Ellingham 5-1, while third placed Great Yarmouth Town Hall - who still have six games in hand on the leaders - were held to a 2-2 home draw with sixth placed Hopton.

This draw came just a few hours after the Yarmouth side had lost 4-2 (Matt Anderson, Jason Thompson) to Old Hunstanton in the Norfolk Primary Cup Final.

Fourth placed Suffolk Punch beat first from bottom Bungay Town A 5-1, while fifth placed Corton A lost 5-2 to eighth placed Lowestoft International.

Ninth placed Norton Athletic Reserves beat 12th placed Sole Bay United Reserves 2-1 with goals from Daniel Robinson and Shane Smith.

Just four games were played in the third division, as the John Moore Shield Semi Finals took priority. Waveney Gunners and Earsham will contest the final next month after 3-1 and 4-1 wins respectively over Waveney A and Marquis of Lorne.

A late winner from third placed Spexhall Reserves was enough to take the points in a narrow 1-0 win over fifth placed Kirkley & Pakefield B. Sixth placed Norman Warrior beat Oxford Arms Reserves 2-0, while seventh placed Corton White Horse Seltic Reserves beat tenth placed Mutford & Wrentham Reserves 5-2.

Blundeston Magpies Reserves have had a good week with two successive 1-0 wins, moving them into eighth, after they beat 12th placed Factory Arms on Saturday and then beat ninth placed Oxford Arms Reserves on Tuesday.

Hak leads by example for Norton

APPROACHING the final hurdle in the crucial promotion and relegation stakes in the popular three division Lowestoft league, numerous issues still have to be resolved.

And it promises to be a crucial bank holiday weekend ahead with two games in the next three days.

It's a case of as you were in division one as joint leaders Norton and Waveney Reserves both had fine wins. Two goals from Norton's player manager Steven Hak and further strikes from Andy Boggis and a Danny Hoadley penalty sealed a good 4-2 away win at eighth-placed Ole Frank at Normanston Park.

Second placed Waveney Reserves also moved to 45 points, but from having played a game more, as they closed the goal difference between the two sides at the top to just two in a convincing 7-2 home win over 12th placed Mutford & Wrentham at Denes High school. Goalscorers were player manager Shaun Howes, Ian Hunter, two from Scott Jermy and another hat trick from Ray Winney.

With previous third placed side Barsham redundant, Oxford Arms and Spexhall took advantage to move into third and fourth respectively. Oxford just beat tenth placed Blundeston Magpies 4-3, while it was a “jeckyll and hyde” performance from Spexhall as they bounced back from being 1-0 down to seventh placed Pot Black following Darren Boyd's penalty, to hit back in the second half and win 3-1 with goals from Harley Lubbock and two from Danny Milne.

Still with games in hand, sixth placed Hearts of Oak had an easy 8-2 away win at bottom of the table Beccles Caxton Reserves, while Kirkley & Pakefield A returned to winning ways in moving up to ninth with a 4-2 home win over 11th placed Corton White Horse Seltic.

The top four teams in division two all won, as leaders AFC Star had a narrow 5-3 away win at ninth placed Tudor while second placed Pakefield Re-United were awarded the points after 13th placed Sole Bay United Reserves could not raise a side.

Third placed Suffolk Punch and fourth placed Gt Yarmouth Town Hall both hit a magnificent seven in convincing home wins - 7-2 over seventh placed Ellingham and 7-1 over eighth placed Crusaders respectively.

Hopton moved up to fifth with a good 4-2 home win over12th placed Bungay Town A, Corton A are sixth after narrowly beating 11th placed Lowestoft International 1-0, while tenth placed Norton Athletic Reserves beat bottom of the table Harleston Town Reserves 4-3 with two goals from Daniel Robinson and further strikes from Gary Crisp and Steve Nicol - but Harleston missed a penalty that could've sealed a point.

Likewise in division three, the top four sides all won. Leaders Waveney A narrowly beat fifth placed Kirkley & Pakefield B 3-2, despite another brace for young marksman Olly Winram for the visitors.

Second placed Waveney Gunners beat first from bottom Marquis of Lorne 3-1, while third placed Spexhall Reserves also had a narrow away win beating 11th placed Westhall 1-0.

Earsham kept up the pressure in fourth with a 4-2 away win at tenth placed Blundeston Magpies Reserves, while seventh placed Corton White Horse Seltic Reserves beat sixth placed Norman Warrior 2-0.

Mutford & Wrentham Reserves are eighth after a 0-0 draw with 12th placed Factory Arms, while Oxford Arms Reserves moved up to ninth with a 5-1 away win at bottom of the table Carlton Rangers.
