League Report 16th April 2011

We will start this week’s roundup with massive congratulations to second division side Hopton who won the Norfolk Primary Cup after beating Great Massingham 3-2 in Friday nights final at Plantation Park. Hopton will now be looking to secure the points to guarantee them promotion to the first division which would cap a remarkable season.

Following this weekends’ games and those played in mid-week the first division title race is still no clearer but now looks a straight race between Oxford Arms and Hearts of Oak with Hearts being the big beneficiaries this week. On Tuesday they defeated Kirkley & Pakefield A 6-2 and closed the gap on the two sides above them as Norton Athletic and Oxford Arms battled out a goal-less draw however Hearts then when on to thump an inept Norton 9-1 on Saturday to boost their goal difference whilst realistically ending Norton’s chances.

With Oxford winning 3-1 at Blundeston Magpies they returned to the top of the table and are 4 points ahead of Hearts from the same games but with many difficult fixtures remaining it is still in Oxford hands as they have to play Hearts again where anything other then a defeat should give them one hand on the trophy.

Elsewhere in the division there were some strange results as Spexhall hit Pot Black for a 6-1 win and Barsham beat Corton White Horse Seltic by the same scoreline.

Pakefield Re-United returned to winning ways thanks to their 2-0 win against Kirkley & Pakefield A whilst Gt Yarmouth Town Hall and Waveney Reserves shared the points following their 3-3 draw.

DK Consultants had a good week in picking up another 6 points and boosting their goal difference further as midweek they defeated the current occupiers of second place Waveney Gunners 3-2 whilst for the second Saturday running ran out 10-0 winners this time against Waveney A.

Gunners meanwhile fell to another defeat on Saturday this time losing 2-0 to Bungay Town A.

Mutford & Wrentham are up to fourth place as they beat Spexhall Reserves 3-1.

Earsham are comfortably in mid table following their 2-0 win at Beccles Caxton Reserves whilst Norton Athletic Reserves made it 8 wins in the last 12 games as there 2-1 win over Lowestoft International sees them up to 9th place and means they require just a single point to guarantee safety as Telecom Rovers drew 2-2 with Crusaders to hang on to their slim chances of survival.

The third division title race has been thrown wide open as Corton White Horse Seltic reserves dropped 4 points this week as they were held to two 2-2 draws by Kirkley & Pakefield B in midweek and on Saturday. This coupled with FC Eastports 9-0 win against Oxford Arms Reserves and Mutford & Wrentham Reserves 2-1 win at Harleston Town Reserves means that Corton have 56 points from 22 games, Mutford have 54 from 23 and FC Eastport have 53 from 21 games.

Elsewhere in the division Royal Oak beat Blundeston Magpies 2-1, Southwold Town Reserves beat Carlton Rangers 3-2 whilst Lowestoft Albion scored 4 times but still lost 6-4 to Westhall in a bad tempered game.

The league would now like to hear from any new clubs wishing to join in the 2011/12 season. Please contact Secretary Glyn Gray in the first instance, 01493 651261.
